In a tragic incident, Bijan Das, a prominent Trinamool Congress leader serving as the deputy head of Guma-1 Panchayat in Ashoknagar, North 24 Parganas, was fatally shot in the Ashoknagar area. According to district police statements released on Monday morning, Das was shot at close range during a dispute at a party worker's house on Sunday night, leading to his untimely demise despite efforts to rush him to the hospital.
The altercation reportedly erupted between Das and a local land businessman, identified as Gautam Das, alongside other individuals, resulting in the fatal shooting. Police sources revealed that the assailant approached Bijan and fired two bullets in rapid succession, hitting him in the ear and head. While Ashoknagar police have initiated an investigation into the incident, with several individuals detained for interrogation, no arrests have been made yet. Local residents suggest that internal factional conflicts within the party may have fueled the violence, although it remains unclear whether political motives were behind the murder. Barasat MP Kakli Ghosh Dastidar also visited the hospital upon hearing the news, underscoring the gravity of the situation within the Trinamool Congress party.
